Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)

In some cases where the quantity and / or quality of sperm is inadequate, conventional in vitro fertilization is not sufficient because the sperm unable to fertilize eggs for themselves. Same is true for those patients who did not fertilize, or the percentage of fertilization of eggs was very low in an in vitro advance. In this case the injection of sperm into the egg is the treatment of choice.

ICSI involves the direct injection of sperm into the egg, passing through the zona pellucida and the wall of the egg. This procedure requires great skill technique to introduce sperm into the egg without damaging it. This is done under the increase resulting from the inverted microscope and a sophisticated system of micromanipulation.

After injecting the eggs are left incubating for 3 to 5 days after the transfer of embryos to the womb, as in IVF.
(steps to make an IVF)

The preparatory phase and ovarian stimulation was performed as in an IVF.

As in IVF, embryos are not transferred can be frozen for the future.

The risks are the same as with IVF. It is important to remember that ICSI is a relatively new procedure. The first child born in the world that this was in 1992. From the studies that have been made so far have not shown an increase in birth defects, abortions or problems with pregnancy. The only exception is that there may be a slight increase in problems of sex chromosomes and that these children may have fertility problems in the future.

Pregnancy rates of fertilization and improved a lot with ICSI in cases of severe male factor (counts less than 5 million sperm) and in patients with a history of previous failures in IVF.

With this procedure can be achieved pregnancies in some cases where men have no sperm in the semen (azoospermia), sperm obtained directly from the testicle.

ICSI is the treatment of choice in patients who have a vasectomy and want to have a child. In this case the sperm can be obtained directly from the testicle.
